On The Subject Of Change
Thoughts On Change, Passing Time, And The Self
Whether welcomed or uninvited, change will let itself into our lives — it will be ever present.
Environment is immediately altered once the forces of change have arrived; behavior alters, moods shift, and energy takes on a new feel. The force of change alters experience and perception; what once was wholly peaceful, without friction, may at once become anxious and unpleasant—and vice versa.
Experiences and feelings exist in their own time and cannot translate or be transposed beyond their place in space and time. Moments cannot be recreated, feeling cannot be fabricated…
…replication is impossible; everything in life is fluid and impermanent…
…to grasp at a moment, to try to preserve—or re-materialize—an experience is to disregard the nature of life itself. These efforts will only be effective in degrading whatever instance was trying to be resurrected.
The only productive response to the arrival of change is to hear it, allow it in, and to allow the self to move with its forces.
But change arrives with uncertainty close in tow, and we perceive the presence of danger in the unknown. It challenges our minds and the structure we call safety.
