In Defense Of Our Selves
Our world readily provides the human mind with challenge—in all forms: physical, spiritual, logical, psychological, moral, [the list goes on…]. It is no wonder then that we all too often become callous, untrusting, wary of our fellow man and our environments.
But, this supposed defense of our selves proves not only to be futile, but overtly destructive. What we commonly understand as protecting our selves, is nothing more than diminishing our selves.
The human mind and spirit must live openly. They must absorb, interact, give, get, risk, fail, and succeed. To build barriers around the self is to rid the plant of sunlight—without the transfer of energy, without receiving light from the world it is in—the plant withers and soon dies.
It is true, that by engaging in—and with—the world, we put ourselves at risk. But, risk and opportunity exist in accord. To rid one’s life of one, is to rid one’s life of the other.
We must live with our eyes open; neither too eager and optimistic, nor too guarded and foreboding.
If one is to live, they must allow themselves to do precisely that: live.
