High Walls

Painting by Henrik Dønnestad.

It towered,

its vertex obscured—invisible—

rising some unknowable distance from where it began.

The path along its base progressed,

seemingly in perpetuity,

stretching some unknowable distance from where it began.

To inspect,

to question—

to learn of this formation—

was to travel an unknowable distance,

for an unknowable time,

to arrive at the unknowable,

or—perhaps—

nowhere at all.
