“Like so many miles of chain…”

Like so many miles of chain
restraining
changing
caging a wild thing

An exemplification
a parable in and of itself
of our relentless
untiring
wholly misguided pursuit

Domination
ownership of nature
of Earth
and its land

We are the spool
entombed in the endless coils
the barbs sink into our skin
opening
tearing
peeling back

Revealing a most unnerving vacancy
nothingness
within

In futile desperation we toil
fight
struggle
purchase
divide

Manipulating and imagining
abstract borders
and deeds

So we may continue to spool
to unwind
and stretch the coils
tight
straight
and far

Inspecting the lines
straining to look down
the distances they span
searching the wire
for some piece
an indication
of ourselves.
